Behind illegal drugs, raw milk is one of the most commonly traded illegal product in America (Monroe). Why is it illegal? Should the government have a right to limit our freedom to restrict our food choices? Consumers know the risks. All raw milk products in Washington come with a warning label that states, “WARNING: This product has not been pasteurized and may contain harmful bacteria. Pregnant women, children, the elderly and persons with lowered resistance to disease have the highest risk of harm from use of this product.” Those whose drink raw milk make an informed choice to consume it, and pay steep costs per gallon. We sold gallons for $8:25 when my mother ran a raw milk depot in the States, where a dairy dropped off unpasteurized milk to our house and we sold and delivered it to many families. We didn’t make any profit selling the milk, but we worked long hours organizing the depot to ensure others had access to freedom in food choices. Luckily, selling raw milk was legal in our state, Washington, but that is not the case with many other states. In addition, the U.S. government frequently raids raw milk dairies, trying to find cause to shut them down. For sellers of raw milk, the trade can be extremely dangerous, because the F.D.A. has broken into homes of dairy farmers with no notice and even shut down many without reason. The government claims to be worried about salmonella concerns, but other food products are just as susceptible to that bacteria. The fact is, the government doesn’t want us to have the freedom to choose raw milk, or choose we would like to eat.. They want us to listen to their guidance blindly, and choose milk from giant, industrial farms where the cows live in horrible conditions. It’s important to me that everyone has a choice in what they want to consume, and that the government doesn’t dictate these choices for us.
